Now this is a tough one. Actually it’s not; it’s quite simple really. It’s over-rated.
Shake Shack has been hailed by foodies and New Yorkers themselves, as the ultimate burger. Well I’m here to tell you otherwise. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad. It’s just not GREAT.
For some reason, I had Shake Shack in my head as some sort of one-off, gourmet goodness; but in fact it’s a simple, fast food burger chain. I went for the staple ShackBurger: cheese, lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce (no idea what was in that or if I even got any!) and a vanilla milkshake. I’ve learnt to not bother ordering fries in New York because no where seems to get it right.
I was also encouraged to order their famous frozen custard, which I was looking forward to, as I’ve never had anything like that before. Yet after seeing the broken custard machine behind the lady taking my order, slowly oozing thick lava-like custard onto the floor, I decided against it.
Don’t get me wrong, the burger was fine – not amazing – just fine. But in all honesty, the milkshake was better. The problem was, my burger lacked any real punch – there was no drippy, juicy goodness, which was what I was expecting after all the hype. Perhaps my expectations where too high.
Go try it for yourself and let me know what you think. If you’re across the pond from New York, they’ve recently opened (as of 5th July) a Shake Shack in London’s Covent Garden.
